On March 5, 1928, the De Havilland Aircraft Company of England incorporated a subsidiary business in Canada. Over the coming years, this small upstart would become one of the most accomplished aircraft designers and manufacturers in Canadian history. The DHC-1 Chipmunk—an all-metal trainer developed for the Royal Canadian Air Force—was the first all-Canadian design to come out of De Havilland Canada and helped establish the young company as a leader in the North American aviation industry.

Job Details

The Crew Chief assumes the accountability for leading a group of direct employees in the De Havilland MRO asset cluster (as defined from time to time). The Crew Chief has direct accountability for the production functions on an hourly/daily/weekly basis. The Crew Chief acts as direct liaison between direct employees and the Production Manager or the Operations Manager. The Crew Chief has primary accountability for ensuring the execution of the short-term objectives for the team.


Key Responsibilities 

  • Provide leadership to ensure that the team remains aligned to the specific short-term goals and objectives set and meets hourly/daily/weekly targets as identified
  • Ensure initial product orientation and training for new employees is completed, conduct orientation and training when required
  • Ensure all health and safety policies/procedures are being followed by all direct employees under the direction of the role
  • Ensure the direct staff remain compliant with all applicable regulations (including Transport Canada), standards and laws
  • Escalate operational risks, delays and other issues to appropriate Production or Department Managers
  • Ensure appropriate resources available for work tasks planned
  • Coach and train less experienced workers (e.g. apprentices, employees new to product) by providing hands-on instruction and feedbackEstablish and reinforce positive, respectful, transparent communications and interactions
  • Maintains awareness of employee ‘pulse’, ensure culture is in line with organizational direction, report issues as required


Key Accountabilities

  • Ensure employees follow all required company policy/procedures
  • Ensure individual performance is being managed, progressive discipline identified where required, performance improvement plans in place where needed
  • Ensure appropriate metrics are clearly defined, communicated to, and understood by, the underlying operational team
  • Ensure the team has executable action plans in place to support and de-risk the short-term operational goals, that those plans have specific timelines, KPIs for success and are monitored for risks, delays and issues on a daily basis
  • Communicate progress to plan / mitigation plans daily
  • Ensure employees follow all required company policy/procedures
  • Ensure team is resourced to execute the work plans


Experience & Education

  • 10+ years in progressively responsible aviation / aerospace leadership roles in a multi-organizational context, preferably in an environment of constant change and evolution
  • A valid AME “M1” or “M2” Transport Canada License considered an asset, M2 preferred 
  • Possess knowledge expected of an AME – M on De Havilland aircraft types
  • Experience with De Havilland aircraft and systems considered an asset
  • Experience with general aircraft repair, fabrication and installation
